TM 14 SW WASHBROOK WASHBROOK STREET 2/39 22.2.55 The Grange II House, in several builds. C16, C17, extended late C19, the original range and crosswing now forms crosswing to right. The present main range is partly C16 and early C17, extended to left in late C19 when left crosswing was added. Partly timber framed, mostly rendered, some exposed in both medieval and C19 builds. Part brick. Plaintiled roofs. Main range. Ground floor painted Flemish bond brick, first floor rendered timber frame. 2 storeys. 3 bays, 2 bays of which are clearly C16 and C17, the left hand bay contained within C19 extension. Central late C19 or early C20 studded door beneath raking plaintiled roofed porch supported on brackets. To left and right later C20 replacement 3-light cross casements. Three first floor 3-light casements with rectangular leaded lights, the central light larger. Gault brick axial stack with recessed panels, at left end, red brick stack to rear of main range, both stacks with oversailing caps. Left hand cross wing. 2½ storeys. Ground floor Flemish bond brick, upper storeys exposed tension braced timber frame. Moulded brick band beneath exposed first floor joist ends. Ground floor part glazed small paned French window. First floor oriel window with rectangular leaded lights. Gable cross mullion. Shaped barge boards and drop finials, finial to gable apex. Rear of cross wing similarly treated. Left hand return has two external red brick stacks with oversailing caps, and linked to crosswing by timber framed plaintiled links. First floor tension braced frame. 2-light cross mullion with leaded lights between stacks at first floor. Similar ground floor window to left, with off centre single light between the stacks. Rear of main range pargetted in raised square panels subdivided by flush cross, and central circle alternating with a square, some also with raised bosses. Ground floor oriel with C20 diamond leading to closely spaced original, but possibly reset cavetto ogee and roll moulded mullions. 5-light mullion window immediately to left, with hollow and roll moulded mullions. Above, first floor 4-light ovolo moulded window with C20 diamond leading, and similar shorter 2-light sections to left and right. Beyond, to right, ground and first floor C20 casements of one and 2-lights respectively, and an early C20 brick embattled 2-storey extension, with 2 casements per storey. Right hand wings jettied 2-bay depth crosswing, gable to road, with exposed frame, with 2 tiers of tension bracing to first floor, and arch bracing to gable. Single tension bracing to ground floor. 2-light plain casement to ground floor, 4-pane, 2-light first floor casement. To left perhaps the original main range; extended to left to house stack; now internal within gable wall; and with gault brick shaft with recessed panels. Ground floor facing road, 2-light 4-pane casement beneath label, with shorter 2-light sections to left and right, with original cavetto moulded mullions. First floor 2-light, 4-pane casement. The ground floor frame is exposed. The rear wall, now the right return to the entrance front has ground floor glazed door and first floor small paned window obscuring mullion window with internal shutter slide. Interior: Original ground floor chamber has 2-centre arched doorway in transverse wall, axial beam with cavetto and roll mouldings, cavetto moulded joists. Similar cavetto and roll moulded beam over former inglenook. Early Cl7 blind arcaded panel reset over fireplace. Raised panel to right. Cross wing: Brace to transverse beam is of similar profile to the doorhead in parlour. First floor blocked 3-light diamond mullion window to rear bay of right hand wall. Queen struts to side purlin roof. Tie beam braces missing. Jowled posts. Braces to left and right of front bay of frame. Replaced splat baluster stairs to both parts of house.
