Heritage Designations guidance

Heritage designations are in place to protect the nation's heritage.

Historic England (previously English Heritage) maintain The National Heritage List for England (NHLE) which is the only official, up to date, register of all nationally protected historic buildings and sites in England - listed buildings, scheduled monuments, protected wrecks, registered parks and gardens, and battlefields. These are known as Designated Heritage Assets.

Many archaeological and historical sites in Suffolk are protected under the following designations:

Scheduled Monuments

This refers to historic buildings or sites included in the Schedule of Monuments kept by the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The regime is set out in the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.

Registered Parks and Gardens

This refers to parks and gardens of special historic interest under The Historic Buildings and Ancient Monuments Act 1953. The majority of sites registered are, or were originally, the grounds of private houses, but public parks and cemeteries are also important categories.

This designation refers to buildings of special architectural and historic interest. The designation regime is set out in the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990.
