Local Organisations
There are many different societies and amateur groups involved in the archaeology, history and heritage of Suffolk. Here is a selection:

Suffolk Archaeological Field Group - an amateur group who investigate sites in Suffolk through documentary research, fieldwalking, metal detecting, geophysical survey and small excavations. Part of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History.

Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History - Suffolk's largest and oldest archaeological and historical society, encouraging and publishing research. Affiliated with the Council for British Archaeology.

Suffolk Family History Society - amateur genealogists who promote and encourage the study of family history, genealogy, heraldry and local history.

Suffolk Gardens Trust - preserve and promote landscape heritage and creating new gardens, and offers visits, lectures, active research and hands-on crafts

Suffolk Historic Churches Trust - information of Suffolk's Churches.

Suffolk Local History Council - encourages and supports the study of local history and acts as an umbrella organisation for groups and individuals with similar interests.

Suffolk Regiment Living History Society - a 'living history' group to honour the memories of those who served in the Suffolk Regiment.

Sutton Hoo Ship's Company - A community engagement project run by volunteers, based at the Longshed in Woodbridge. The Sutton Hoo Ship’s Company was formed in 2016 to resurrect the Anglo-Saxon ship buried at Sutton Hoo, in or around 625AD. The aim of the project is to turn the famous ghost imprint into a living reality and as an experimental archaeology project to create an interpretation of the Anglo-Saxon mound 1 ship.

Royal Archaeological Institute - covers all aspects of the archaeological, architectural and landscape history of the British Isles and offers lectures, publications, advice and grants.

Society of Antiquaries of London - supports research, communicates results, promotes conservation, offers research grants and programme of events.

The Society of Church Archaeology - promotes the study of churches and other places of worship, via research, conservation, management of sites.

The Society for Medieval Archaeology - promotes the study of medieval archaeology, buildings, landscapes, archaeology and artefacts. Publishes Medieval Archaeology journal.

The Society of Post-Medieval Archaeology - promotes archaeology of late medieval to present day in Britain and Europe. Publishes Post-medieval Archaeology journal.

Young Archaeologists' Club - UK-wide club for 8-16 year olds to participate in archaeology with over 70 clubs nationwide. The nearest one to Suffolk is Cambridge.
