Description

The following item shall be added: TM 26 SE KETTLEBURGH 3/185 Barn immediately east of Brunswick Farm house. II Barn. Probably early C17, extended later in C17 and with Cl9 midstrey and late C20 repairs. Timber-framed, clad in weatherboards on a brick plinth. Steeply pitched pantile roof with gable ends. Plan: The southern 3 bays appear to be the original 3-bay barn, the narrower central bay is the threshing bay. The 2 bays at the north end are probably a later C17 addition and built as 2 storeys. In the Cl9 a midstrey was built on the east front of the threshing bay. What were probably C19 outshuts have recently been removed from the east side and south end. Exterior: Single storey, and 2 storeys at the north end. The east side has a gabled midstrey to the left of centre with large double doors to the cart entrance. Similar east entrance opposite on the west side to the right of centre. At the time of the survey (1989) some of the weatherboarding had been removed exposing the timber frame which was being repaired. Interior: The walls are of vertical studding without a midrail but have long straight tension braces. Some of the studding has been replaced. Jowled wall-posts with arch braces to the tie-beams either side of the threshing bay; queen-posts above with arched braces to the collars and to the square-set clasped purlins. The common rafters are largely complete, originally without a ridgepiece; the ridgepiece above is a later addition. The north end has a floor supported on a chamfered cross-beam with straight cut stops and a boarded stud partition wall separating the floored section from the main barn. The threshing floor is paved in stone. Listing NGR: TM2643962372
