ALDERTON (Off) HOLLESLEY ROAD TM 34 SW (East Side) 10/1 Cedar Court 16/3/66 G.V. II Small country house. Late C18 with C20 additions and alterations by Eric Sandon. Red Flemish bond brick with plain tile roof. Two storeys and attic. Entrance front: 5 bays symmetrically disposed with a central doorway which has a classical surround approached by 6 ashlar steps, originally having iron balustrading to their sides with splayed lowest step. The doorcase has pilasters at either side which have bands of fluting alternating with blank, flush wood. Miniature arches and dentils to the cornice. Door of 6 flush panels with flush panelling to the reveals and a fanlight over with ornamental tracery and projecting springers and keystone. To either side of this at ground floor level are sash windows with stone sills and flat-arched heads of 3x4 sash panes with slender glazing bars. Four similar lateral windows to the first floor. To the centre at first floor level is a Venetian window with wooden surround, the side windows of lx3 panes having plain entablatures and the central arch having moulded decoration of quatrefoils in diamonds and a triple keystone. Modillion cornice below the parapet which has a stone coping. Hipped roof above this with hollow valley with 3 pedimental dormer windows each of 2 casement lights. Chimney stacks to right and left behind the ridge each of 6 flues. Left hand side: C20 outshut at ground floor level to left and blank walling to right of this. To the first floor are 2 blocked windows at right with brick sills and flat-arched heads and at left are two sash windows of 3x4 panes with stone sills and flat-arched heads. Dormer window to centre of the roof of 2 lights with flat roof above which is the central ridge chimney stack. The right hand side has two 2-light semi-basement windows at left. Two windows of 3x4 sash panes to the ground floor and 3 bays at first floor level of which that at left is blocked but those to right each have sash windows of 3x4 panes. Rear: cambered-headed doorways to right of centre and far right with glazed C20 doors and rectangular fanlights. Tripartite windows of C20 date to right and far left with cambered heads and central sashes of 3x4 panes and lateral lights of lx4 panes. The first floor has an arched window of 2x4 panes slightly to left of centre and to left of this a 2-light casement window with stone sill and flat-arched head. To right of this is a sash window of the same dimensions but having 3x4 sash panes. Modillion cornice and parapet as elsewhere.
Interior: entrance hall with open well staircase of 2 flights with small flight between the 1/4 landings, having stick balusters, moulded handrail which is ramped and has a wreathed curtail and moulded tread ends with floral ornament. Moulded cornice to the lower hall and the upper landing has a cornice with paterae and acanthus leaves to the frieze. The upper of the quarter landings has a doorway with an arched fanlight over it with decorative tracery that now leads to a C20 flight of stairs. The sitting room has panelled shutters, a moulded dado rail with floral motifs set in quatrefoil panels to the walls with moulded surrounds and a C20 pine chimney piece. The cornice has a mixture of Gothic and classical motifs having darts within trefoil headed miniature arches. The dining room has quadrant niches to the rear wall at either side of a C20 panelled door, fluted dado rail and fluted cornice. The drawing-room across the rear of the house has been formed from two rooms and a through passage in the C20 and an L shaped passageway formed around it. To the first floor bedrooms are hob-grates of early C19 form with one of mid-C19 date. The attics are approached by 2 staircases, one of 2 flights and one a winder staircase. The exposed beams of the roof are of pine.
