OTLEY IPSWICH ROAD TM 15 NE (South side) 3/112 - Wood Farmhouse - II
House, formerly farmhouse. C16, C17 and early/mid C19 timber framed with a slate roof, originally thatched and Flemish bond brick with a slate roof. Two storeys: H-shaped plan. Yard front: C16 central range with the C17 cross wing at right and the C19 cross wing which incorporates a portion of an earlier cross wing to left. The C16 range has a near-central stable door with, to its right, a 3-light C19 casement. To the ridge is a massive stack of 2 flues at right and a single flue stack of C20 brick at left. The C17 wing has two 2-light C19 casements and to the first floor a 4-light C17 window with ovolo-moulded mullions and surround. Above this is an angled weather board. Left hand C19 wing of brick has a ground floor sash window at left of 3x4 panes with shutters and at right is a window of 2x4 panes. Band of 3 bricks depth between the floors. The first floor window at right is of 2x4 panes. Shallow-pitched roof above this. Left hand side: 2 bays with sash windows to both floors of 3x4 panes, the ground floor windows having shutters. Right hand side: near-central ground floor doorway with a 4-light casement to its left. The first floor has a C19 four-light window at left and a C17 window of 4 lights with diamond-section mullions to the right. Rear: the C19 wing at right has a doorway to its left and a sash window of 3x4 panes to its right with a blank first floor. Its left hand flank has a mezzanine staircase window of 3x4 -panes. The central range has a doorway at right and a 2-light casement at its left with a 2-light first floor gabled dormer window. Outshut in the re-entrant angle between this range and the left hand C17 wing. This latter wing has to its ground floor a 3-light C19 casement window and a 3-light casement at left. The first floor has a cross window and to the attic is a 3-light casement. The right hand flank has a first floor window of 4 lights with diamond-section mullions.
Interior: massive hollow-chamfered ceiling beam to the ground floor of the C16 portion with chamfered joists which have stepped run out stops. Close studded walling with jowled wall posts which have broach end stops. The C17 wing has a ground floor room with chamfered ceiling beam with ogee end- stop and plain joists. Chimney with 4-centered arch to this room, partially rebuilt in the 1980's and close studded walling. Winder staircase to right of this hearth leading up from the baffle-entry lobby. The C19 wing has a staircase of one flight with stick balusters, turned newel and moulded mahogany handrail. To the first floor the C17 wing has one room with chamfered ceiling beam and joists, close studded walling, a basket-arched fireplace above which is a painted panel showing 3 circular designs, the central one having laurel wreaths around it and the whole painted in red ochre and blue paint. The room above the C16 portion appears to have a raised ceiling.
