Description

OTLEY STONEY ROAD TM 25 SW (East side) 8/115 - Charity Farmhouse - II Farmhouse, formerly small manor house. Early C15 with later additions and alterations. Timber framed and brick with colourwashed render. Plain tiled roof, probably originally thatched. Two storeys and attic. Formerly central open hall with 2-storey wings to either end. Entrance front: slightly projecting wing to left which has, at ground floor level, a 3- light casement (of C19 date as is all the fenestration). The jettied first floor has a similar window and the gable is jettied with a blocked 2-light window. To right of this the hall range has a gabled porch at left with a ½-glazed door and at right of that are three 3-light ground floor casements. The first floor also has three 3-light casements. To the ridge at left of centre is a C17 stack of 2 flues. The right hand gable end has, at ground floor level, a 3-light window, a 2-light window to right of the first floor and a similar 2-light window to the attic. Rear: projecting outshut with a catslide roof at left of C19 and C20, with a ½-glazed door at right and left. To right of this, slightly recessed, is a wing with a 3-light ground floor casement and a first floor 2-light casement. To left, at first floor level, is a 2-light flat-roofed dormer window. Two-flue stack at left. Interior: The ground floor room in the northern wing has a heavily-moulded beam which may be brought from elsewhere. To the southern end of the ground floor are further decorated axial ceiling joists. The central 2-bay hall has moulded wall posts visible to both floors and a massive cambered tie beam to the central truss. Within the attic is an octagonal crown-post with slightly cavetto sides, richly moulded cap and base and 4 arched braces connecting to a common rafter and the crown purlin. At either end are terminal, square crown posts with further single arched braces. There is soot blackening. Listing NGR: TM2000453940
