CRETINGHAM (Off) TRAVELLERS ROAD TM 25 NW (South side) 4/53 16/3/66 Shrubbery Farmhouse - II
Farmhouse, C16. Timber framed with colourwashed render and a plaintile roof, originally thatched. Entrance front: C20 fenestration. Projecting C20 single-storey porch at right of centre which has a plank door with single-light window at right of this. To right of the porch are 4-light ground and first floor windows and at left are one 4-light and a 3-light window, each at ground and first floor levels. To the ridge, at right of centre is a stack of 2 flues with decorative vertical strip and bands. The right hand side is blank, save that there is a 3-light casement to the gable. Left hand gable end: 3-light ground floor casement and a 3-light casement to the gable. Projecting and at left of this is the lean-to addition with a garage extension. Rear: at right is a projecting C20 gabled wing with blank walling to the gable end at ground floor level and a 3-light first floor casement and a 2-light attic window to the gable. At right a re-positioned lead rainwater head is dated 1847 and at right again is the rear of the garage block. The left hand flank of this wing has a stable door and 4 and 3-light ground floor windows and 3 three-light casements to the first floor. The rear of the axial range has French windows at left, a 4-light casement at right and to the first floor are two 4-light lateral casements with a single-light casement between them. To the attic is a gabled dormer window below the stack. Interior: Chamfered ceiling beams to the hall with stepped ogee stop and chamfered joists with run-out end stops. Further beam and mortice holes indicating the line of a screen, now removed, and doorway, now leading through to the rear wing, on line with this former screens passage. Near- set close studding. Rebuilt fireplace with C20 bressumer. A ceiling beam with mortice holes to another ground floor room indicates the former division between the service rooms. Inserted baffle-entry plan with renewed C20 winder staircase. At first floor level there are chamfered ceiling beams with joists and close studding, jowled wall posts with tension bracing. Cambered tie beams and collars, heavy common rafters and 2 sets of purlins to the roof which is of 7 bays.
