Description
TM 15 SE WITNESHAM JUBY'S HILL
1/48 Hill Farmhouse 16.3.66
- II
Farmhouse. c.1500 (partly demolished and rebuilt after a fire in late C19). 2 storeys. Timber-framed and plastered, the upper floor jettied on 3 sides. Plaintiled roof with internal chimney of red brick. Small-pane casements of C19 and C20. Mid C19 4-panelled entrance door with broad moulded architrave, on garden side. The surviving section of mediaeval work is a parlour block of unusually high quality. The framing, fully exposed internally, has moulded components of high quality. At the west corners are 2 angle-posts supporting the jetties, each with cresting and other carving. At the window and door positions (now blocked) are pilasters with carved capitals. A blocked window exposed internally has moulded mullions and arched heads to each light. 4 doorways have arched heads, one with rosette-carving in the spandrels. In the chamber above, the ceiling joists are moulded and the original fireplace with cambered lintel survives, blocked. In a small probably original stair wing on north side, the main jettied upper floor structure with moulded bressummer is exposed.
