Description

KETTLEBURGH TM2 26 SE RECTORY ROAD 315/3/10005 Farmbuilding approx. 40m east of Rectory Farmhouse II Farm building, possibly stable, later used as barn. Mid C17. Timber-framed and weatherboarded, roof clad in corrugated metal sheeting. INTERIOR: 3-bay frame: heavy studding, middle rail in gable ends only, reversed braces at corners, halved against inside faces of studs. Some later primary bracing and replacement studding. Evidence for diamond-mullioned windows at ground and first floor levels in each bay on all sides; windows of 4 lights in side walls and 5 lights in gable ends. The exception is the north side of the east end bay, where there is an original doorway and no windows at either level. The arched braces to the 2 open trusses have been replaced by knees. 5-bay roof with 2 rows of stepped butt purlins and long straight wind braces in the end bays. Some heavier rafters are re-used. At some time the building was adapted for use as a barn: the upper floor was removed, and the west bay was widened and the studding removed, to form a cart entrance. A rare example of a pre-1700 farm building other than a barn, with a comparatively intact frame and roof. Listing NGR: TM2674461167
