Description

SOUTH ELMHAM ST. CROSS TM 28 SE 3/48 Spring's Farmhouse - II Former farmhouse. Part mid C16, part early C18. 2 storeys. Timber-framed and rendered; clay pantiles; a C19 red brick gable on the right. An internal chinmney-stack set below the ridge, with a plain rebuilt shaft of Tudor red brick. C20 replacement casement windows, with transomes on the ground floor. The present entry is into a small C20 extension on the left end. Inside, to the right of the stack, is one C16 bay with good studding and reversed braces. On the upper floor, a 5-light window with plain chamfered mullions, replaced. Clasped purlin roof. An upper fireplace with a square brick surround has chamfered jambs and plaster, rusticated to simulate stone. One good studded door with narrow moulded planks. This part of the house was lengthened about ½ a bay, probably when the C19 brick gable was added. To the left of the stack, the framing is later and less substantial: thin joists set on edge, small main beams and primary braces in the walls. This is apparently an C18 replacement of an earlier section. A small C18 wing extends at the rear. Listing NGR: TM2960283806
