Description
SOUTH ELMHAM, ST. PETER GRANGE ROAD TM 38 SW
4/86 The Grange
GV II
Farmhouse. Early to mid C17, with early C19 extensions. 2 storeys. The older part of the house, on the left, is timber-framed and encased in very late C19/early C20 white brick; the remainder of the building, on the right, is in early C19 white brick. Some render over timber at the rear. Black glazed pantiles. An internal chimney-stack between the 2 halves of the building with a plain square white brick shaft. The early C19 range has various windows: old 3-light casements, one large-paned sash on the upper floor and a tripartite sash on the ground floor. The house stands sideways-on and the gable-end facing the road has been ornately treated: flanking full height pilasters, pierced and carved bargeboards, and a single-storey canted bay, inserted later, with slate roof and 3 late C19 sash windows without glazing bars. 6-panelled entrance door under a Roman Doric portico with modillions and roundels over the columns. The left hand range has various casement windows, mainly 3-light, and an entrance door with 4 flush panels. The interior of this range is in 5 bays, with only main beams and posts visible: the former with chamfer and pyramid stops, the latter with long, narrow jowls. One partition wall has been removed, and the chimney-stack may be an insertion. Roof with 2 rows of stepped butt purlins.
