Description
ILKETSHALL ST. ANDREW TM 38 NE 2/1 Grove Farmhouse
- II Farmhouse. Late C16, with later extensions. 2 storeys and attics. Timber- framed and rendered; clay pantiles. Basic 3-cell form. An internal chimney stack has a plain white brick shaft with a pilaster strip down the front. A small 2-storey wing projects from the front, and contains the entrance: slightly recessed plank door in a square surround with moulded jambs. Old 2- light and 3-light casement windows with a single horizontal bar to lights; one C20 replacement on the west. A 2-storey C19 extension in colour-washed brick and slates has a 3-light casement window with segmental arched head to surround. A late C19 single-storey lean-to along part of the front overlaps the main range and the extension. Inside, the timber-framed range is in 5 bays, without a chimney-bay. Good exposed studding; to the east of the stack, the main beam has ovolo-moulding and unusual squared-off stops with groove; to the west, chamfered cross-beams with stepped stops. Chamfered main posts with run-off pyramid stops and heavily jowled heads, arched braces to the tie- beams. On the upper floor, one blocked original window has the mullions visible through the plaster. The ceiling of the wing has been partly cut away to insert a late Victorian stair. The upper ceilings are original. Roof in 6 bays with 2 rows of unstepped butt purlins and windbraces; the rafters are pegged to the purlins. The building is irregularly divided into 2 dwellings. It stands on a moated site.
