Description

TM 38 SE RUMBURGH THE STREET 2/10 Moat Farmhouse - II Farmhouse, on a moated site. Late C16 and mid C17. 2 storeys. Timber- framed; encased in late C19 red brick on the north, south and east; the west side has earlier brick facing incorporating a chimney-stack. Black glazed double Roman tiles. L-shaped form, with a main range and cross-wing; a C19 gabled addition on the north infills part of the angle between the 2 ranges, and a C17 extension on the south contains a stair. A single-storey lean-to along the east side. A large internal chimney-stack within the wing, with a plain red brick shaft; the end stack on the west has 2 square shafts with attached corbelled head. Various late C19 windows: some 2-light casements with a single bar to lights, some sashes with clear glass to lights, all with wedge lintels. Entrance door with 6 flush panels, moulded surround and wedge lintel. The cross-wing is now in just over 3 bays, and prior to the brick facing was probably 4 bays long; plain ceiling-beams only exposed. In the main range, an open fireplace with plain timber lintel. A fine dog-leg stair within the south wing, with turned balusters and newel posts and a moulded handrail; at the foot of the stair the doorway to an associated half-cellar has a square ovolo-moulded surround with multiple lamb's tongue stops, jewel and groove, at the foot of each jamb.
