Description

TM 48 SE WRENTHAM LONDON ROAD 6/82 Pyes Hall (formerly listed as - Pyes Hall arid Barn adjoining) 27/11/54 GV II Farmhouse. Mid C16 core with considerable later modernisation and various rear additions. The core is probably timber-framed, now entirely encased in late C18 red brick; plaintiled roof. 2 storeys and attic. A main range with projecting cross wing to left. 3 windows to main range, mid C20 3-light large-paned mullion and transom casements under flat brick arches. Similar windows under segmental arches to cross wing. 2 doorways: 6-panel doors with glazed top panels. Brick dentil eaves cornice. The main features externally are the 2 internal stacks with groups of 3 and 4 detached octagonal flues with moulded bases. The ceiling of one ground floor room in the main range has ornamental plasterwork, probably late C17: the ceiling is divided into 2 halves, both with moulded cornices: in the centre of each half is a cartouche, set within a square panel; one of the cartouches is bisected by a later panelled partition. Another room has a roll-moulded floor beam, evidently shortened in C19 when the staircase lobby was formed. C19 straight stairs with pierced finials to the newel posts. Listing NGR: TM4908382080
