Description
LKETSHALL ST. ANDREW GREAT COMMON TM 38 NE 2/8 Hawthorn Farmhouse
- II Farmhouse. Mid C16. 2 storeys and attics; 3-cell plan. Timber-framed; encased in C18 red brick; clay pantiles. An end chimney-stack on the left, set within the gable, and an internal stack, both with similar square shafts and plain bands. 2-light and 3-light C20 casement windows in traditional style. An enclosed, gabled red brick porch with clay pantiled roof. Interior in 5 bays, with ceiling-beams exposed: the ground-floor rooms on each side of the internal stack have plain unchamfered joists set flat and a chamfered main beam with step stops. The upper ceilings are a later insertion, with joists set on edge. The roof has 2 rows of stepped butt purlins, pared-off at their junction with the deep, narrow principal rafters; the cambered collars are halved against the principals with barefaced dovetail halvings, and there is a ridge-piece. The general impression is that the roof is later in date than the frame: probably a later replacement in conjunction with inserting the upper ceilings.
