Description
ILKETSHALL ST. MARGARET TM 38 NW 1/26 Barn immediately to the - east of Shadowbarn Farmhouse - II Barn. Late C17. Timber-framed and weatherboarded with clay pantiled roof. Frame in 5 bays, with an entry into the middle bay on the south side only. Full height studs bisected by steeply-angled primary braces; in the west end wall the primary braces are in the form of St. Andrew's crosses. Moulded post-heads with an ogeeform. The roof is in 10 bays, with deep narrow principals and 2 rows of stepped butt purlins; the ends of the purlins are pared-off, not tenoned. In the end bays, there are straight braces behind the purlins, and the rafters are bisected in the same way as the studs. At the east end, the barn overlaps an earlier timber-framed fragment, probably originally aisled and storied: posts and braces to the wall-plates on each side.
