Listed Building: SLOUGH FARMHOUSE (282108)

TM 38 SE WESTHALL 2/34 Slough Farmhouse. GV II* Farmhouse. Mid C16 and later. 2 storeys and attics to main part of front range; 1½ storeys to the section which adjoins it on the east, and to the rear range at right angles to it. Timber-framed; faced on the front in whitewashed brick, rendered on the sides and rear; black glazed pantiles. 2 internal chimney-stacks with plain red brick shafts. Various 2-light and 3-light casement-windows: some C20 replacements; 2 3-light early C19 casements with transome; one small 3-light original window with moulded mullions. Plank door in a plain surround with wedge lintel. The main part of the front has a 2- cell internal chimney plan, with a cross-passage at its east end which links it with the lower range, but also with an original lobby entrance. Both ground floor rooms have finely-moulded ceilings: joists with roll-mouldings, and main beams with a complex roll and cavetto moulding with curved stops; the main beam to the east of the stack even more elaborate that that on the west. Several original windows with moulded mullions in situ: one on the south wall of 7 lights. The partition dividing off the cross passage has been removed, but both outer doorways are in situ, that on the north blocked, and there are plain exposed joists. On the upper floor, the room to the east of the stack is in 2½ bays, extending also over the top of the cross passage, and has been divided into 2. Assembly marks to the open truss. To the west of the stack, an original fireplace with a large timber lintel, and a narrow door to the side of it into a closet beside the stack; remains of a high window with moulded mullions, and 2 large blocked inserted C17 windows to north and south. The newel stair beside the stack leads up into the original attics. Roof in 6 bays with diminished principals, clasped side purlins and arched windbraces; the common rafters are covered. The lower section to the east of the cross- passage, which is slightly later in date than the main range, and replaces an earlier service area, is clearly framed to be attached to an existing building. In 3 bays, with no evidence of internal partitions; heavy unchamfered joists, main beams with chamfer and curved stops; moulded post- heads. Clasped purlin roof with windbraces.
