Description

TM 37 NE WISSETT RUMBURGH ROAD 5/73 Valley Farmhouse - II Former farmhouse. Early C16, with later alterations and C19 extensions at rear. 2 storeys; an attic above the east end only; now a 3-cell form to main range. Timber-framed and rendered, but previously with exposed timbering; black glazed pantiled roof. An internal chimney-stack with a plain red brick shaft. Various casement windows; plank door. A small single-storey extension in red brick and flint in front of the east end of the main range. The basic house was apparently 2-cell, with a cross-entry and an end chimney- stack, the 3rd unit being added in conjunction with the present stack, which has 2 back-to-back hearths on the ground floor. The position of the entrance door has been changed, but it was formerly divided from the hall by a moulded plank and muntin screen, still in situ. The room to the west of the former cross-passage, with plain unchamfered joists and a chamfered and stopped main beam, is very large for a service room, and was probably an unheated parlour (cf. layout at 61 High Street, Bildeston, Suffolk). The main beam and joists of the hall ceiling have chamfers and curved stops with bar. The roof of this range was substantially raised, probably when the Victorian extensions were built on; within the roof-space to the west of the stack are the remains of 2 queen-post trusses from the earlier roof.
