Listed Building: PARADISE FARMHOUSE (282119)

TM 48 SW WESTHALL COX COMMON 3/45 Paradise Farmhouse 1-9-53 II Former farmhouse. Late C16. 2 storeys and attics. Timber-framed and rendered; thatched roof; a very fine original red brick gable end on the west, crow-stepped, incorporating a chimney-stack with rebuilt octagonal shafts on the original moulded bases: on the upper storey, 2 blocked 3-light windows with timber ovolo-moulded mullions and remains of stucco to the surrounds, and a similar 4-light window in the apex of the gable. An internal chimney-stack with similar treatment of the shafts was inserted in 1970, in conjunction with an extension at the east end. The front of the house has C20 casement windows with small side lights and diamond leaded panes to each storey, and 4 eyebrow dormers. C20 enclosed porch in Tudor brick, with a crowstepped gable. 5 bays remain of the original house, which is thought to have been larger: framing exposed inside. Main beams with ovolo-moulding, joists with curved stops and jewel. The fireplace on the ground floor at the west end has a very finely carved lintel, reused from a demolished building in Beccles; on the upper floor, the fireplace has it original ovolo-moulded brick arch. The upstair ceilings are original, with the joists set on edge. Roof with clasped purlins, a lower row of unstepped butt purlins, and windbraces. To the east of the inserted stack, a 2-bay C20 extension in matching timber-framing, the same width and height as the original house. Reused C16 timbers throughout the frame, but the roof constructed in traditional clasped-purlin form using new green oak. Listing NGR: TM4008882462
