Description
SOMERLEYTON GREEN LANE TM 59 NW 2/46 Barn 70m east north east of Park Farmhouse GV II* Barn. C16. Timber framed, clad in tarred weatherboarding, with a half-hipped thatched roof. Against the west wall a corrugated iron lean-to addition. 8 bays, the original cart entrances probably placed in the third bay from each end. The wall frame is largely intact, with full-height oak studs and cranked arched-bracing. The framing in the 3 north west bays has been removed. Most of the original braces to the tie beams are missing. Fine roof with 2 tiers of queen- posts. At both levels the queen-posts are square, with jowled heads; there are cranked arched braces to both sets of purlins and similar braces to the collars at the lower level only. This roof is a remarkably complete example of a rare type (cf. a barn at Rook Hall, Eye), hence Grade II*.
