Description
METTINGHAM LOW ROAD TM 39 SE 1/20 The Valley House
- II Former farmhouse. C16-early C17. Timber framed core, mainly cased in early C20 white brick. Pantiled roof. 2 storeys and attic. 2-cell form. Early C20 windows and door; attached to the front is the remains of a lean-to conservatory. Central axial stack. At the time of survey (June 1985) the house was under renovation and much of the frame was exposed internally, some parts with closely-spaced studs. There are 3 bays; the stack occupies part of the centre bay and seems to be a later insertion or reconstruction. The northern end has an original first floor window with heavy cavetto mullions and the remains of another similar window. The first floor structure at this end has been renewed. The southern room comprises a single bay: the ovolo- moulded floorbeam and a similarly-moulded but mutilated first floor window imply a later date than the remainder of the house. In the north side of the stack is a small C17 cupboard with carved door, perhaps brought from elsewhere. The extensive additions of 1905-12 are not of special interest.
