Listed Building: RED HOUSE (282130)

TM 37 NE WISSETT GRAY'S LANE 5/56 Red House GV II Former farmhouse. Early C18, enlarged in the early C19. 2 storeys and attics; irregular form. Red brick, but part probably with a timber-framed core; plaintiles. Several internal chimney-stacks with plain red brick shafts. Most windows are 3-light early C19 casements with transome, segmental 1 arched heads to frames and surrounds, and square-leaded panes; some mid-C20 replacements in matching style. 6-panelled entrance door. One brick on the south (garden) front is dated 1808, which may be the date when the house was extended. The older part of the building, probably forming the whole of the original house, consists of an L-shaped section, now the east wing and part of the south range. On the south side, aligned east-west, a 3-bay room with ovolo-moulded main beams, linked by a chimney-stack to the 3-bay east wing, aligned north-south, which was divided into a 2-bay heated room and a single- bay unheated service room. Good plain exposed ceilings with chamfered main beams and substantial joists set on edge. The remainder of the house has characteristic Regency fittings. Listing NGR: TM3676279955
