Listed Building: SPEXHALL WHITE HOUSE (282091)

TM 38 SE SPEXHALL CHURCH LANE 2/17 Spexhall White House - II Farmhouse. Late C16. 2 storeys and attics; L-shaped plan. Mainly timber-framed and rendered; some whitewashed brick. C20 single Roman tiles to front slopes of roof; black glazed pantiles to rear. An internal chimney-stack to the main range with a plain rebuilt red brick shaft and corbelled head. Most windows are 2-light or 3-light C20 casements: on the ground floor and in the gable end with transomes. At the rear of the main range, where the wall is brick-faced, a C19 mullion-and-transome type window to each storey. In the north-east corner between the ranges a 1½-storey early C19 brick lean-to extension containing a porch with 2 arched doorways, a pointed 2-light Gothick window, and a recessed door with 4 sunk panels; slate roof, dentil cornice, and an inserted late C19 canted bay with slate roof and 3 large-paned sash windows. The principal 2-bay room in the main range has multiple roll-mouldings to the main beam and to the 2 beams in the partition-walls, with the mouldings continued down the posts (cf.Manor Farmhouse, Wissett). In the parlour (on the south east), reeded architraves to the doorway and windows, and panelled shutters, all of c.1830. The cross-wing contains the service rooms. On the upper floor, the main posts have long jowls and no braces. Both ranges are contemporary, and the roofs have clasped side purlins, a lower row of butt purlins, and the remains of arched windbraces. Listing NGR: TM3846280961
