Description
SOUTH ELMHAM, ST. MARGARET TM 38 SW
4/64 Beck Farmhouse
GV II
Former farmhouse. Late C15 core, with late C16 and C17 alteration and extension. 2 storeys; 3-cell form. Timber-framed and rendered; plaintiles to front slope of roof, pantiles to rear. An internal chimney-stack with a plain rebuilt red brick shaft. Various old casement windows: 2-light and 3-light to upper floor, 2 with transomes on the ground floor; pintle hinges. 2 plank doors. 2½ bays of the original medieval house remain: the roof was raised in the C16 and there are later extensions at both ends. The chimney-stack, which may have been preceded by a smoke-bay, was inserted at the lower end of the medieval hall, and the remains of the service end partition, including 2 doorheads, rest on one of the fireplace lintels. Full height studs; reversed and ogee braces; remains of diamond-mullioned windows. All the ground floor ceilings are very low: those in the centre and left end of the house have very heavy unchamfered flat joists; to the right of the stack, the joists are set on edge. Roof with 2 rows of stepped butt purlins with pared-off ends; cambered collars.
