Description
GROTON CHURCH STREET 1. 5377 Groton Hall TL 9541 59/349 23.1.58 II* GV 2. A C16 and later timber-framed and plastered building with cross wings at the north and south ends. The front was altered in the C18. Roof tiled, with a fine ridge chimney stack with 4 octagonal shafts with moulded spur caps and moulded bases. The north wing extends to the west and has the remains of a chimney stack with 3 hexagonal shafts. Two storeys. One:3:1 window range of double-hung sashes with glazing bars. Two 6-panel doors with plain pilasters and cornices. John Winthrop held his first court as Justice of the Peace at Groton Hall in 1609. He became Lord of the Manor in 1618 and was the first Governor of Massachusetts and founder of Boston in New England (1630).
