Description
The monument includes a medieval moated site which is located in an isolated position about 1.25km south west of Great Thurlow village centre.
The moated site includes a sub-rectangular island measuring a maximum of 58m north east to south west by 52m north west to south east. This is enclosed by a water-filled moat, measuring up to 10m wide and 2.5m deep. A causeway across the south eastern arm of the moat is not thought to be original.
The remains of a derelict brick and timber building and associated brick outhouse on the island are thought to be associated with Glebe Farm, which was formerly located to the south of the moated site. These structures are excluded from the scheduling, although the ground beneath them is included.
