Description

Remains of dovecote 200m WSW of parish church. Probably Med, though built of traditional materials and therefore difficult to date. Perhaps once belonging to Mildenhall PriorY. The building is rectangular, about 10 x 15 paces externally and stands about 10 feet high. Except for large oolite quoins, it is built of chalk and rubble, once rendered, with some fissile sandstone to form the nesting holes which line the four walls. The doorway on the E side has a rough 4-centred arch. 1979: There is a modern breach on the N side. Roofless. The walls need capping to prevent decay . 1986: Walls capped on all four sides. Doorway on E side restored: sides rebuilt, arch repaired on external, original on internal. Breach in N wall has been made into a second doorway, matching that in E wall. Flint, limestone and sandstone have been selected to match original masonary as closely as possibly. Ivy and other creepers growing on walls. Scheduled
