BURES ST MARY 1. 5377 TL 93 NW Farm Building Range including 2 adjoining barns 11/937 about 100m east of Corn Hall II GV
2. Two adjoining barns and adjoining farm building wing. Circa C16 north barn, reroofed, midstreys and south barn added in later C17 or early C18 and south west wing of late C17 or C18; C19 and C20 outshuts. Weather-boarded timber frame on brick plinths. Pantile roof, hipped at north end and gabled at south end. Plan and development: 5-bay circa C15 barn at the north end which in the late C17 or early C18 was reroofed, midstreys added on either side of second bay from the north and a 5-bay barn added to the south end with a central midstrey on the west front. The long narrow 11-bay range on the west front of the south end might be late C17 or C18. In the C19 an outshut was built on the west front and in the C20 a small outshut as added in the angle with the rear (east) midstrey. The silo on the east side was built in 1924. Exterior: A long range of 2 barns with gabled midstreys Go left and right and a slate roofed outshut in the space between. Projecting at The right end is a long weather-boarded wing on a tall brick plinth; brick infill to the timber framed gable end which has a weather-boarded dovecote or ventilation louvre above. The rear, east side has a low hipped midstrey to the right with a C20 outshut to its left and to the left of centre a C20 concrete cylindrical silo. Interior: Original 5 bay barn at north end has vertical studding with waney tension braces and jowled posts with curved brackets inserted in place of the original arch braces to the tie beams. Later (probably late C17 or early C18) roof with diagonally-set clasped purlins above the collars, long straight wind-braces and complete set of common rafters without a ridgepiece. The late C17 or early C18 5-bay south barn with a narrow central threshing bay has midrails unjowled posts with curved timber brackets to the tie-beams, diagonal-set clasped side purlin roof with complete set of common rafters with a ridge-board. The south west wing is timber-framed, partly brick infilled; a narrow 11-bay single storey range with vertical studding, straight tension braces, diagonally-set clasped purlins above straight collars, common rafters complete a ridge-board; some reused tie-beams.
