Description

Great Cornard 1. 5377 Abbas Hall TL 94 SW 9/173 16.4.71. I 2. A timber-framed and plastered house with a cross wing at the west end. One of the 2 examples of late C13 aisled hall houses known in Suffolk (The other example is Purton Green Farmhouse, Stansfield). It possibly dates from 1270 to 1290. The interior has been restored and shows the original layout with the 2 doorways to the service rooms replaced approximately in their original position in the closed truss at the lower end of the hall. Details of the open truss with arcade posts with moulded capitals and long passing braces with notched lap joints can be seen on the upper storey. The truss has considerable C15 modification. The C13 structure is of remarkable interest. There is a great open fireplace of the C16 when the floor to the upper part of the hall was inserted. Externally the house has C18-19 fenestration, mainly double-hung sashes with glazing bars. The cross wing is faced in brick (painted). Roof tiled, with a gambrel at the east end and 1 gabled dormer to the main block. On the west side there is a C16-C17 chimney stack with tabled offsets. Much of the internal timber has been exposed.
