TM 14 SW SPROUGHTON HADLEIGH ROAD 4/39 Springvale - II House. Probably C15, extended C17 to C19. Brick, timber framed, rendered, hipped plaintile roofs. Complex plan, formerly a 2-bay open hall with 3 bay crosswing, the hall range extended to west, the crosswing north and south; additional western north-south wing and rear outshuts. 2 storeys. Front facade in 3 bays, 2 horned sashes of 6 panes to ground floor, 6 panel door the upper two glazed. The middle two recessed and moulded, in reeded architrave. The doorcase with panelled reveals and beneath flat shallow canopy. 2 first floor sashes with glazing bars, blank recessed window to right, all with shaped pelmets. Crosswing. Canted ground floor bay window, 1st floor sash with glazing bars also with pelmets. Right hand return, scattered fenstration; sashes with glazing bars and casements. Left hand return 2 storey canted bay, one 1st floor sash with glazing bars. C18 leaded casement in rear outshut. C19 brick stacks, one between hall and crosswing, axially on left hand range, externally to rear. Interior: Inserted C16 brick stack, in places using two stretchers laid together to give appearance of one brick c 20" long. Stair to rear of stack. Chamfered bridging beams. First floor exposed frame of rear and end wall hall, with upper part of hall mullion window with shutter groove. Central tie beam removed. Formerly a crown post roof, but the posts and part of the collar purlin removed, leaving bracing supporting it at the closed truss and almost intact set of smoke blackened rafters contained within C19 roof. Crosswing roof, largely replaced but retaining 2 tie beams with seating for crown posts and possibly downward braces; some rafters also situ, collars removed.
