Description

MENDLESHAM TM 06 SE 4/29 Hawkins Farmhouse -- II Farmhouse. C16 core; service cell probably of 1729 (a date said to be on a plaque in the roofspace); C18 rear wing. Timber framed, cased in grey brick c.1900. Pantiled roof. Rear wing part brick-cased, part rendered, with a later shallow-pitched roof of concrete pantiles. 3 cells. 2 storeys. 3 windows, small-paned casements of 2 and 3 lights under flat gauged brick arches. Lobby entrance: 6-panel door (upper 2 panels glazed); gabled porch of c.1900 with scalloped bargeboards and a semi-circular arched entrance. Stack set in rear roof slope, central to the rear wing. Interior. Most of timbers concealed. Stack is inserted into one end of parlour cell, although where the original heating was is unclear. Parlour ceiling has plastered cross-beams, the hall a chamfered axial bridging beam. Square joists in service cell, with evidence for axial partition. Cambered tie beam at upper end of hall. C19 newel stair in front of stack. Roof not examined. Listing NGR: TM0927364055
