Description

KENTON TM 16 NE 1/130 Kenton Hall 29.7.55 - II Manor house. Late C16, altered after being gutted by a fire in 1919. East wing of c.1920, replacing C16 or earlier work. Long west wing with short return to north. Red brick, laid in English bond. Octagonal corner buttresses. First floor moulded brick string course; C20 coved eaves cornice, the walls no longer full height. C20 hipped plaintiled roof. 2 storeys and attic. Main facade to west. 8 bays, arranged 4:2:2, divided by octagonal buttresses. 2 and 3-light ovolo-moulded mullioned and mullion and transom windows of stuccoed brick, with restored quoined stucco surrounds and moulded pediments over ground floor windows. Ground floor window openings in bays 1 and 2 are blocked; ground floor windows in bays 7 and 8 replaced by a single central window. Between bays 6 and 7 are 2 small blocked openings, the upper one with a hoodmould. 2 C20 hipped dormers. 2 C20 chimney stacks. One-bay gable ends, with intact windows to south. North gable end has a C20 timber ground floor window, the upper window blocked; original stucco quoining to both openings. North wing is fragmentary, partly rebuilt C20. Interior. Gutted by the fire. Early C20 wing has C16 fully-moulded cross-beams and plain joists, all probably salvaged from an older wing which was entirely destroyed in the fire. Moated site. Listing NGR: TM1896764957
