Manor house. Late C16, altered after being gutted by a fire in 1919. East
wing of c.1920, replacing C16 or earlier work. Long west wing with short
return to north. Red brick, laid in English bond. Octagonal corner
buttresses. First floor moulded brick string course; C20 coved eaves cornice,
the walls no longer full height. C20 hipped plaintiled roof. 2 storeys and
attic. Main facade to west. 8 bays, arranged 4:2:2, divided by octagonal
buttresses. 2 and 3-light ovolo-moulded mullioned and mullion and transom
windows of stuccoed brick, with restored quoined stucco surrounds and moulded
pediments over ground floor windows. Ground floor window openings in bays 1
and 2 are blocked; ground floor windows in bays 7 and 8 replaced by a single
central window. Between bays 6 and 7 are 2 small blocked openings, the upper
one with a hoodmould. 2 C20 hipped dormers. 2 C20 chimney stacks. One-bay
gable ends, with intact windows to south. North gable end has a C20 timber
ground floor window, the upper window blocked; original stucco quoining to
both openings. North wing is fragmentary, partly rebuilt C20. Interior.
Gutted by the fire. Early C20 wing has C16 fully-moulded cross-beams and
plain joists, all probably salvaged from an older wing which was entirely
destroyed in the fire. Moated site.
