Description

STRADBROKE LAXFIELD ROAD TM 27 SW 8/98 Street Farmhouse -- II Farmhouse. C16, in 2 closely-dated phases. Later alterations, especially in C19. Timber framed and plastered; colourwashed brick gable ends, that to the right mainly of C17 date. C19 shallow-pitch roof of interlocking pantiles. 2 storeys. Various windows, mainly C18-C19 casements. On the ground floor a canted bay with sash windows of c.1900. One original cavetto mullioned window has been opened out and several other good examples are exposed internally. Mid C20 panelled door to right. Internal and gable stacks, all with C19 shafts. Frame in 5 main bays, the arrangement not entirely clear. The right hand bay is the earliest section, to which was added the brick gable end and stack. 2-bay hall at left end, enlarged at a later date by pushing out the gable end and rebuilding the stack. The central bays were probably service rooms, the internal stack being a later insertion. Good heavy exposed framing with reversed corner bracing. Hall bridging beam has double roll mouldings, carried down each wall post to converge on a circular boss. Hall fireplace has a particularly fine moulded lintol, the mouldings curving downwards at the ends. Listing NGR: TM2349373984
