- Cheney Farmhouse
-- II
Barn. Mid-late C16. Timber framed, the walls and roof clad in corrugated
iron sheeting. 4 bays, a floored bay to the south now lost. Cart entrance in
3rd bay from north. Frame has a middle rail; some studding lost or replaced.
All 3 open tie beams retain their heavy braces. King-post roof, of a rare
form clearly related to that in the rear wing of the adjacent farmhouse (Item
No 2/112). Principal rafters in the form of crucks, curving inwards above
collar level to form straight braces to each king post. There were plank
braces from the king posts to the ridge piece, now mostly gone. Just above
the collars is a row of side purlins, set against the outside of the principal
rafters. Roof altered to hipped form at north end.
