Description

KENTON EYE ROAD TM 16 NE 1/135 Sycamore Farmhouse 29.7.55 - II Former farmhouse. First half of C17, in 2 or more phases, with much later alteration. A main range with parlour cross-wing to left and formerly detached service range to right, set corner-to-corner to the rear. Timber framed; the facade is roughcast-rendered, the remainder plastered. Roof of interlocking concrete pantiles. 2 storeys with attics in parlour and service wings. Mid C20 standard single-paned casement windows. Lobby entrance: late C19 2-storey porch of colourwashed brick with flat parapet; 6-panel raised and fielded door under wedge lintol. Main range has internal stack at junction with cross-wing: rendered moulded base with 2 inset panels at both front and rear; above is a rebuilt plain oblong shaft. Heavy external stack against right gable end. Interior. Much of structure concealed. Ground floor ceiling in main range has unusual arrangement. A heavy cross-beam, approximately central, is ovolo-moulded to the left and has a plain chamfer to the right, with no evidence for a studded partition below. Room to left has an ovolo axial bridging beam, the joists concealed. Right hand room has joists set flat, with slightly moulded edges. Parlour wing has remains of original attic window with chamfered mullions. Several C18 doors with raised and fielded panels. Stair to upper floor has heavy square balusters, a steeply ramped handrail and carved tread-ends. Oak newel stair to attic. Original roof over cross-wing has clasped and diminished butt purlins with arched windbraces. Roof over main range is of butt purlin form, reconstructed in C20. Roof over service range not examined.
