Description

THWAITE WICKHAM ROAD (off) TM 16 NW 3/93 Barn at Thwaite Hall -- II Probably originally a stable block serving Thwaite Hall (demolished), now a barn. C17. Red brick, with weatherboarded gables. South wall whitewashed where other buildings adjoin. Roof clad in corrugated asbestos. To north, a later gabled timber porch and lean-to addition. Various blocked window openings on 2 levels. 2 blocked entrances to north, about 2m. wide and just over 2m. high, with incomplete projecting brick surrounds. Interior. East end has floorbeam with mortices for heavy square joists, now missing; the present floor in this section is Cl9. At the end of the floored section is a dividing wall, partly clay lump, partly studded and weatherboarded. The area beyond is unfloored. Largely intact 9-bay roof with 2 rows of butt purlins and some one-way plank wind bracing. Tie beams unrelated to roof bays. The old Thwaite Hall stood within the moated enclosure immediately to the west and is thought to have been demolished in C18. Listing NGR: TM1095267799
