Description

MENDLESHAM CHAPEL ROAD TM 16 NW Church Farmhouse 7/36 (formerly listed as Church 29.7.55 Farmhouse and barn) GV II Former farmhouse. Late C18 front range, C16-C17 work to rear. Double pile plan. Front range in colourwashed brick, with brick dentil eaves cornice and parapet gables with tumbling. Rear timber framed and plastered. Roof slated to front, the other slopes pantiled. 2 storeys and attics. 3 windows, inset sashes with glazing bars under gauged brick arches, the upper windows half- height. Panelled shutters to ground floor windows. Good doorway: inset 6- panel raised and fielded door, segmental fanlight with glazing bars under keyed arch; panelled reveals; sunk pilasters, broken entablature supported by console brackets on shell corbels, open pediment. 3 dormers with small-paned windows, the central one shallow-gabled, the others flat-roofed. Red brick gable stacks. 2-cell rear wing has internal stack with axial shaft. Interior. Straight stair with stick balusters and ramped handrail. In rear wing, exposed studs and evidence for diamond-mullioned windows. Plain joists exposed in lower ceilings, set flat in left cell and square in right cell. Framing in left cell is more substantial and probably earlier in origin. Listing NGR: TM1056565891
