Description

WINGFIELD CHURCH ROAD TM 27 NW 6/169 Barn at College Farm 5.1.87 - II Barn. Timber-framed and weatherboarded, with pantiled roof. In 7 bays, 5 of the early C16, the remaining 2, at the north end, a C17 addition. High boarded entrance doors, 2 stable doors and 3 shuttered window openings along the west side; a high C18 2-bay porch extension on the east. The 5 C16 bays have the remains of very heavy framing, with closely-spaced studs and main posts with slight jowls; there is a middle rail to the frame along the west wall, but none along the east wall. Several sections of late C18/early C19 replacement framing with primary braces and bisected studs. The straight tie beam have heavy supporting braces, arched and chamfered. Queen-post roof, the queen-posts plain and large, braced to the collars and arcade plates with thin cranked braces. Above collar level inserted upper purlins are held in position by queen-struts. There is a deep narrow ridge-piece. High storage bins have been fitted into the barn, and the truss between bays 5 and 4 cut away; for the same reason, the arched braces of truss 3 have been cut back. Between bays 2 and 1 is an original partition wall with widely-spaced studs, cranked arched braces, and wattle-and-daub infill; beyond it was a bay with a low original ceiling, later raised, and now almost completely removed. This C16 part of the barn originally continued for at least another bay northwards, as the present end (Truss 1) is open. The 2 Cl7 bays which now complete the range were always storeyed and used as a stable and hayloft. Attached to the north is a small single-storey stable building, probably C18, in red brick laid in English bond with a pantile roof. Listing NGR: TM2303876709
