Description

STOWMARKET TM05NW COMBS LANE 614-1/2/46 (South side) 28/07/50 Valley Farmhouse GV II* Farmhouse, now without a farm. Late C15, extended one bay west C18. Rendered and colourwashed timber-frame in close studding. Plain tile roofs. 2 storeys and dormer attic. North front of 6 irregular bays including a 2-storey entrance porch now set left of centre due to later addition of west bay. Timber frame exposed to porch. Plank door. Side windows consist of 3 turned balusters each, formerly open, now glazed. Jettied first and attic floors, both bressummers with carved running leaf ornament. Gabled roof hipped at west end over new bay. Main wall with framing exposed to the upper floor only. Fenestration of north front of 2- and 3-light C20 metal casements. Gabled main roof. Ridge stack rebuilt. South elevation dominated by 3-storey gabled staircase tower, formerly central to elevation. Only attic storey is jettied, but the bressummer has carved leaf decoration. The tower grows out of C19 slated outshut with C20 metal casements. Two 2-light C20 casements to first floor of main wall. 2 flat-topped dormers left of tower. West gable with stack. East gable has a sash window to ground floor with 6/6 glazing bars set in a projecting bay under a hipped plain tiled roof. Jettied attic storey with the bressummer carved with interlace leaf decoration. Running south from west end of south front is a one storey and dormer attic extension. C20 details. INTERIOR. East ground-floor room with sunk quadrant-moulded cruciform bridging beams, west room with chamfered cruciform bridging beams. At first floor the main north rooms either side of porch have brick 4-centred fireplace surrounds, that to east with ovolo mouldings, the other with hollow mouldings. Chamfered bridging beams. West room has late C15 wall painting over fireplace depicting a warrior slaying a second warrior. Passage inserted to south side at first floor. Several C17 and early C18 plank and panelled doors. Original west wall with blocked 6-light diamond section mullioned window with King mullions. Replaced roof of principals, collars and 2 tiers butt purlins. Listing NGR: TM0437757917
