Description
BADLEY
TM 05 NE
1/4 Dovecote 60 metres east of
Badley Hall
9.12.55
II*
Dovecote, C16. About 5m square on plan. Timber framed and plastered.
Plaintiled pyramid roof with opposing gablets, that to the west is
weatherboarded. A pair of C18/C19 stable doors on the west side. The walls
are lined with thick oak planks axially set, rising about 5m from ground to
wallplate. They are about 300-500mm apart and drilled for dowels (some of
which remain in part) which supported the nests. The original external face
was of plaster, of which a little early work remains; there is also some
infilling and repair in narrow C17 red bricks. The structure is basically
complete although the potence is missing; it is a rare surviving example in
Suffolk of a C16 timber-framed dovecote.
