Description

WETHERINGSETT-CUM-BROCKFORD TM 16 NW 3/94 Brames Hall -- II Former farmhouse. C16-C17 core, much altered mid C19. A single long range. Timber framed and rendered, C19 brick at gable ends. Shallow-pitched hipped slated roof. 2 storeys. Front has continuous jetty with coved soffit. Mid C19 large-paned tripartite sash windows, a range of 5 to upper floor (excluding porch). 3 lower openings to right of porch are slatted. Altered early C17 2-storey porch: jettied sides, old shaped brackets below eaves at front. Mid C19 semi-circular entrance arch with raised springers and key; flanking pilasters. Within the porch is a good early C17 moulded doorway with large stops of an unusual bulbous form; original plank door with panelled and studded face. Old bench seats in the porch have re-used C17 panelling behind. Against rear wall to left is a late C16 stack with 3 offsets and the moulded bases of 2 octagonal shafts. 2 internal stacks have plain C19 shifts. Interior. Substantially unaltered since C19. C17 hall ceiling has plastered and moulded cross beams and cornice. Other rooms have more simply- moulded plasterwork. Much re-used C16-C17 panelling, especially in one lower room which has 2 fluted Ionic pilasters and an overmantel with geometric panels, all with C19 simulated graining. Panelling around the head of the stair has a late C16 frieze with flowing foliage and beasts' heads. One upper fireplace has a small C17 carved overmantel, another a stuccoed 3-centred arch. Unmodernised service rooms to right of porch: some heavy C16 framing on upper floor, oak stair against rear wall, several C16 doors. The name of the house is a corruption of Braham's, after the family who once owned it. Listing NGR: TM1376067223
