Description

STOWUPLAND SAXHAM STREET TM 06 SE 5/188 Grange Farmhouse -- II Farmhouse, mid C16. 2 storeys. 3-cell cross-entry plan. Timber-framed and plastered. Plaintiled roof; an axial C17 chimney of red brick. C19 casements. C19 boarded door at cross-entry position, with a light open porch on slender posts. A complete mid C16 house with late C16 or early C17 alterations. The cross-passage is complete, with twin service room doorways; the 4-centred arched head is visible above one of them. The parlour to right has ogee-and-scotia moulded beams. Good tension-braced studding with one blocked diamond mullioned window and evidence for others. At the left-hand end is a pair of massive base-crucks formerly supporting a half-hip (later converted to a gable). Arch braced tie-beams were removed from a narrow chimney bay and centrally over the hall in late C16/early C17 when the present larger chimney was inserted with newel staircase. Good chamfered floor joists over the hall; possibly also an alteration of c.1600. Listing NGR: TM0846460867
