Boundary Farmhouse

GV II*
Farmhouse, mid C16 with remodelling of early 017. 3-cell cross-passage
entrance plan; a parlour cross-wing added in early C17. 2 storeys and attics.
Timber-framed and plastered; the cross-wing has a projecting gable tie-beam
with a frieze of scallops and with the carved initials "I.W.", standing (it is
believed) for James Wythe; beneath is one of a pair of carved drop-finials.
Plaintiled roofs with two C17 axial chimneys of red brick, one having a pair
of pilaster shafts. Late C18 3-light casements with transomes. One chamber
has an oak framed C17 oriel of 8 lights with ovolo-moulded mullions and a pair
of carved console brackets; two similar 6-light oriels in other chambers.
Late C18 2-panelled entrance door with cornice; an C18 open flat-roofed porch
on C20 posts. The C16 3-cell core has high-quality close-studding with
original herringbone bricknogging (mainly concealed), and evidence for
diamond-mullioned windows. 2-tier wind-braced butt-purlin roof, probably a
C17 renewal. Inserted C17 attics with ovolo-moulded beams; all the chamber
ceilings have trailing vine freizes and panels in plaster, with fleurs-de-lys
and pendants within the panels. Above, an open chamber fireplace is a painted
C17 design of white stars and circles simulating lacework on a red ground.
The 2-bay parlour wing added to right has good early C17 framing with close-
studding and ovolo-moulded main beams with joists set on edge at attic level,
flat at 1st floor level. Two C17 newel staircases and some wainscotting.
