Parish room (No.2) and house (No.4). No.2 comprises a C15 house, conveyed to
the town of Mendlesham in 1618 for use as a school. No.4 is a former
schoolmaster's house, substantially of 1873 but incorporating remains of a
workhouse which had been added onto the schoolroom in 1726. No.2 raised in
C18 or C19 to accord with later work, but retaining original roof underneath.
No.2 timber framed and roughcast-rendered, encased in white brick at rear.
No.4 in red brick, the bays divided by pilaster strips; the rear wall is
timber framed and rendered. A hipped pantiled roof over the whole range. 2
storeys; No.2 is 1½ storeys internally. No.2 has casement windows, the upper
window (formerly a dormer) with diamond-leaded glass. Boarded door. No.4 in
3 bays: inset sash windows with glazing bars under segmental arches, the upper
windows half-height. 6-panel door, the upper 2 panels glazed. A central
ridge stack. Interior. No.2 has some exposed framing in 2 bays. In
partition wall with No.4 is an open truss: slightly cambered tie beam and
heavy arched braces. One bay of C17 on-edge joists at each end. Intact C15
common rafter roof, the timbers heavily sooted. A succession of deeds
relating to the property from 1536 onwards are in the Suffolk Record Office at
Ipswich.
