Description
WINSTON THORPE LANE, ASHFIELD
TM 26 SW
2/148
House (formerly an
outbuilding) linked with
and immediately south-
west of Barley House
Farmhouse
GV II
House; probably built for some industrial use such as brewhouse with granary
above, in late C16. Major remodelling of early C19 and c.1980. 2 storeys;
about 5 bays. Timber-framed; the lower walling almost rebuilt C19 in red
brick, the upper storey roughcast. C19 glazed pantiled roof; an axial C19
chimney of red brick. Mid C20 casements; some diamond-mullioned windows
restored and glazed. The building is linked to Barley House Farmhouse by a
C19 1-storey block of red brick, containing a C20 boarded entrance door.
Unmoulded framing exposed internally: arch-windbraced studwork, and heavy
unchamfered joists. The building is believed to have been built with the east
gable open at the upper floor; goods would have been lifted from a boat from a
short arm of the River Deben which flows nearby.
