5/18 Boats Hall

-- II
Manor farmhouse. C16 with C17 and C19 alterations. Mainly timber framed and
plastered; C17 red brick parapet gable ends. The side walls of the C17
service end are also of red brick, plastered over. Plaintiled roof. 2
storeys and attics. 3-cell form. 5 windows, mainly C19 small-paned
casements; 2 first floor sash windows with glazing bars. 3 doorways with C19
doorcases. To left a 6-panel door with glazed upper section and doorcase with
frieze and cornice. Central lobby entrance with C19 half-glazed door, reeded
architrave and cornice. To right mid C20 French windows, also with reeded
architrave and cornice. 5 dormers with mid C20 windows. Internal and gable
stacks, 2 with moulded brick bases. Victorianised interior. The hall has a
bridging beam cased in moulded plasterwork and a similarly-moulded cornice:
this is early C17 work, said to be for the North family. Remains of similar
work in the hall chamber. Moulded bridging beams in parlour and parlour
chamber. A small section of studding is visible on the first floor, with a
blocked window with cavetto mullions. Small evidence for queen-post roof; the
present roof seems to be a C17 replacement when the attics were made. Against
the service room is a partition with large fielded panels, probably of C17
date, and a large door made from earlier panelling. Intact slatted cheese
room. C19 entrance lobby with straight stair: stick balusters, ramped and
wreathed handrail. Fine encircling moat.
