Description

HEMINGSTONE MAIN ROAD - TM 15 SE 7/125 Cartlodge, 50m south of Old Hall Farmhouse GV II Cartlodge, C18 or possibly C17. 3 bays with aisles on both sides. Timber- framed; each side bay is infilled with clay lump; the ends were originally open, but the rear wall is now clad with weatherboarding. Thatched roof, half-hipped at ends. Pegged oak framing, with plank arch-bracing up to tie beams. The feet of the arcade posts were once linked to one another, and are still tied to the external walls. Clasped-purlin roof. A good example of a draw-through cartlodge; the incorporation of aisles is an exceptional feature, and is possibly a rare survival of medieval form, (cartlodges do not survive from earlier than C17 in Suffolk).
