Description

STONHAM ASPAL EAST END ROAD TM 15 NE 6/173 East End Manor 9-12-55 - II* Former farmhouse. A mid C15 3-cell open-hall house, both end cells being remodelled in late C16/early C17 to form non-projecting cross-wings. 2 storeys, the end cells with attics. Timber-framed and plastered; the upper floor of the parlour wing is end-jettied on brackets. Areas of C18 cable- pattern pargetting; fragments of earlier, perhaps C17 pargetting with rusticated quoining and a frieze of linked lozenges. Concrete plaintiled roofs. 2 axial chimneys of red brick; one of c.1600 has a sunk date panel at front, and a rebuilt sawtooth shaft. Various C19 and C20 small-pane casements. The C15 windows in the open hall have been exposed at the upper level, with glazing between square mullions. Framed and boarded C20 entrance door with arched head. A large 2-bay open hall, now open from 1st floor upwards: the open truss has a cambered tie-beam with braces forming a full 4- centred arch, and an octagonal crownpost with moulded capital and 4-way plank braces. Close-studding without visible wind-bracing. A parlour doorway has an ogee-arched head; evidence for similar twin service doorways. The service cell has the unusual feature of a further bay beyond the usual twin rooms (c.p. Ubbeston Hall, Stonham Aspal, Item 5/184). Remodelling of c.1600 included a large open fireplace in the hall, backing onto another (now blocked) in the parlour, the insertion of an upper floor with heavy chamfered members in the hall, a plank-and-muntin screen (of which only a small part remains) at the cross-entry, and a single-bay extension to the service cell. A little C17 or C18 plaster ornament in a chamber (a plaster date 1735). Listing NGR: TM1530259871
