Description
STONHAM ASPAL MICKFIELD ROAD
TM 16 SW
2/176 Red House
9-12-55
- II
House, mid C18. Red brick with tuck pointing, and good quality dressings in
rubbed brick: a band at 1st floor, and a modillion course between moulded
bands beneath the eaves. Parapet gables. Plaintiled roof with an axial and a
gable chimney, both of red brick. 2 storeys, 6 windows. Original window
openings with flat arches of finely-gauged brick; mid C20 small-pane casements
simulating original sashes. Good mid C18 entrance doorway: door with 6
fielded panels, fluted pilasters, and dentilled cornice and pediment. The
symmetrical facade is not well synchronised with the traditional 3-cell plan
of the house; possibly the front wall was re-faced and the windows
repositioned within 50 years, in which case the core may be of c.1700. A rear
service wing was added c.1800, with similar detailing but with large casements
beneath cambered arched heads.
